Katie Brown caused an Internet uproar after posting a photo of her dog’s mouth taped shut on Facebook, and now police have finally tracked her down.
Authorities located Katharine F. Lemansky, aka Katie Brown (as she’s known on Facebook), in North Carolina on Monday and have charged her with animal cruelty, NBC News reports.
The search, which spanned three states, began after Lemansky,45, posted a photo on her Facebook page Friday of her dog’s mouth bound with duct tape and caption that read: “This is what happens when you don’t shut up!!!” The post has since been deleted, but it didn’t take long for pet lovers to share the photo more than 380,000 times and react in utter disgust to this form of punishment.
Calls from concerned citizens started pouring into police in South Daytona, Florida, which is where the post appeared to have been made from. Police soon learned that Lemansky no longer lived in the area and possibly had moved to Connecticut.
Police found her in Cary, North Carolina, and she is scheduled to appear in Wake County court Dec. 14 on a misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty. She reportedly admitted to taping her dog’s mouth. If convicted, she could face a fine and up to 150 days in jail.
Cary Police Capt. Randall Rhyne said in a statement that animal control officials found both of Lemansky’s dogs to be very well cared for, which is why neither dog was removed from the home.
“They are clean and well-nourished and appear to be comfortable in their surroundings,” he said. “And there were no signs of injury to [the one dog’s] muzzle, not even detectable hair loss.”
A look at Lemsakey’s Facebook page turns up many photos of her pets, and despite this incident, she appears to love them very much.
But no matter how you slice it, and no matter how much Lemansky cares about her animals, this act was clearly a major error in judgement. And it seems she will be learning this lesson the hard way.
