I would go back to France every year if I could. For the years that I can’t, I take a vicarious vacation there by way of my Paris-decorated work cubicle, Carla Bruni’s music, photographs of my time in that country and conversations with friends who have lived there. But there’s another way to take a trip to France without leaving home: books.
One such book, Hudson in Provence by author and artist Jackie Clark Mancuso, takes young readers on a journey from Paris to the south of France and does so through the eyes of a dog named Hudson.
Beginning his adventures in Paris at the Gare de Lyon train station terminal, Hudson eagerly awaits the beginning of his Provençal vacation. Children will see the bright colors of the illustrations and are likely to be just as eager to see what adventures the small dog will experience. He goes to the Côte d’Azur, the place and even to a bicycle race. But he wants to do more than that. Hudson, who’s read up on Provence and discovered that there are working dogs in the area, wants to do exactly what they do. He tries herding sheep and finding truffles – anything he can to embrace Provence and discover what he’s good at.
The book is illustrated with bright, colorful scenes that provide a fantastic backdrop to the story, which is also intermixed with French terms. There is even a dictionary at the back. Not only will children read a story about finding out what you’re good at, but they’ll also take a little journey through another country while learning a little French.
Hudson in Provence, published by La Librairie Parisienne, is available in May 2015 for $17.95.
