“I can see you. Why can’t I touch you?”
Separated by only a screen door on a warm, spring day, a wild rabbit can’t resist approaching to meet a pet rabbit who likes to sit and watch the outdoors. This video was uploaded to YouTube in 2012 by user bill16504, who wrote that the wild rabbits were mating and this one took an interest in his bunny, Pep.
Pep seems quite interested in the wild rabbit, too, which appears to be an Eastern Cottontail (Sylvilagus floridanus). Wild rabbits are a different species from pet rabbits, which descend from the European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus). The many pet rabbit breeds all derive from O. cuniculus. Being different species, this means that if they could truly meet, no offspring would result from a mating.
But the charm of this video is the apparent “forbidden love” aspect. With comments that recognize this:
“He wants an Uptown Girl ahah” — Alex Batt
“He likes big buns and he cannot lie.” — daysleeper724“’I’m sorry, but… but… OUR LOVE CAN NEVER BE. We come from two completely different worlds!’” — Chilliwack
“The only thing standing between him and the most gorgeous woman he’s ever seen; an invisible, logic-defying barrier. Frustration on a cosmic scale.” — Higgs Bonbon
There was certainly a lot of observation going on in this video. Certainly it was an interesting few minutes for these two rabbits, and, thanks to video recording, more than 200,000 people have also shared in the event. Because who doesn’t like to see a star-crossed romance?
