Bulldogs are beautiful. At least that’s what participants and organizers of the 3rd Annual Bulldog Beauty Contest think. More than 200 Bulldogs, along with their owners, are expected to gather in Long Beach, Calif., on Feb. 10, vying for titles such as Most Wrinkled, Best Kisser, Most Talented, and Biggest Head.
Held at Livingston Park in Belmont Shore, Saturday’s event is presented by Haute Dogs, a community organization of dog lovers headed by Belmont Shore-resident Justin Rudd and his Bulldogs: 9-year-old Rosie and 1-year-old Riley.
Admission is free to spectators, and Bulldog owners are invited to enter their wrinkled pooches for $10 in advance, or $20 on the day of the event. Donations are tax-deductible and benefit Rudd’s Community Action Team (C.A.T.) a nonprofit group which includes Haute Dogs, as well as other community events held in the Belmont Shore and Long Beach area.
Beauty contest judges include real-life beauty pageant winners who evaluate dogs on personality, charm, face, figure, and first impression. Good looks are no advantage here! Winners of the 14 categories each receive a T-shirt or doggie gear prize package. The Grand Prize pageant winner receives a one-year supply of dog food.
In addition to the beauty contest, held at 2:30 p.m., the event runs in conjunction with a pet adoption fair, beginning at 11:30 a.m. Local representatives from the Bulldog Club of America Rescue Network will also be on hand to answer breed-specific questions, share educational literature, and will even have kiddie pools available so heat-sensitive dogs can chill out.
Special guest Tyson the skateboarding bulldog is also scheduled to show off his boarding skills just before the beauty contest begins.
