Q. I have just purchased a 2-year-old Pomeranian, and I know very little about dogs. The woman I bought him from said he eats Purina Dog Chow. I have had him four days and he has only eaten 1/3 cup at one point. He to eat table food, but I don’t want to give it to him. I want him to eat a balanced diet. Any suggestions?
A. Trust me: Put the dog food out, and he will eventually eat! This question comes up quite often. Dogs can go for days without eating, as long as they are drinking water, and eventually they will get hungry enough to eat their dog food.
No doubt, your Pom has been spoiled with table scraps, and it will take some time to transition him to regular food.
It is true that puppies and very small dogs, such as 5-pound Yorkies, can get low on blood sugar if they do not eat. But most dogs will eat before they become hypoglycemic.
My advice: Continue to wait him out, and don’t give in to his desires for table scraps. Human food in the form of table scraps can cause all sorts of GI upset and even life-threatening pancreatitis, so it is up to you as the responsible dog owner to make sure your dog is getting a high quality dog food.
