Vertebrate (n.) – A vertebrate is an animal that has a spinal column or a backbone. These animals belong to the subphylum Vertebrata, and include mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. All of our aquarium fish are vertebrates. Not all aquarium residents are vertebrates — many fishkeepers also have invertebrates (animals with no backbones) in their aquariums, including corals, anemones, crabs, shrimp, snails, sponges, sea stars, clams, slugs, urchins, worms, etc.
