Acidic: (adj.) Acidic water measures below 7.0 on the pH scale; also called “soft” water. Many Asian and South American fish species, such as gouramis and tetras, do well in aquariums with slightly acidic water. To create acidic water for fish that require it, hobbyists add a commercially made water softener or peat moss. Most captive-bred fish can adapt to both acidic and alkaline conditions.
