They Ate What? X-Ray Contest Gives “Inside” Look to the Things Dogs Eat

Many dogs try to eat things that shouldn't, but some dogs take it to a whole other level.

What do 26 golf balls, a fishing pole and a door hinge have in common? It’s not a set up to a bad joke (unless maybe you’re the owner), these items have all been eaten by a dog in this year’s They Ate What? X-Ray Contest.

In an annual contest, hosted by Veterinary Practice News, veterinarians are asked to send in the most amazing x-rays they have seen. The VPN staff reviews the unbelievable photos and selects a winner to receive a cash prize.

This year’s winning entry was submitted by Gordon Schmucker, DVM, of Lisbon Veterinary Clinic in Lisbon, Ohio. The X-ray, belongs to Zeus, a 1-year-old Doberman Pinscher who had swallowed 26 golf balls. Yes – 26. While Zeus’ parents know he loves to chase golf balls, they didn’t realize he was chasing down a snack too.

While you may not think it can get much weirder than that. The runners up would tell you otherwise.

Who do you think ate the worst item? You can also vote for you favorite in the first-ever People’s Choice contest, brought to you by Sentinel, for a chance to win a $500 VISA gift card. Vote for your favorite by clicking here.

And don’t forget to tell us your favorite X-ray with the hashtag #TheyAteWhat.

So the next time you find your favorite pair of socks missing – just remember – some owners have it way worse than you! And if you find that this hits a little too close to home, think of the bright side, maybe your vet can enter this contest next year.

We should mention, that all of these animals are doing just fine, but the behavior is certainly not recommended. If your dog eats anything unusual, make sure to contact your veterinarian right away.
