Australian Cattle Dog Rebel, a two-time Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show Best of Breed winner, certified service dog, and titled herding dog, was on the job in the wilderness.Serving as hiking buddy and guardian, he accompanied owner Rebekka R. on a two-week fly-fishing trip from their home in Ontario, Canada, to southern Alberta. During the trip, Rebel added another accomplishment to his already impressive résumé.
“Rebel loves hiking, and carried his own food and water in his backpack. He came fishing with me and was intrigued when I’d pull a fish out of the water,” says Rebekka, Rebel’s co-breeder with her mother, Joyce R.
“Rebel ended up being a handy tool for landing fish,” she says. “He’d sit on the bank, eyes riveted on the line, anticipating the moment a fish would strike. As soon as a fish was hooked, I’d say ‘OK,’ and into the water he went, getting directly behind the fish and driving the trout toward me as I pulled it in.”
