New approach: Say goodbye to denial. A whopping 45 percent of the nation’s dogs are overweight or obese, according to a 2009 study by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention. Feel your dog to gauge his fitness: Run your hands along his sides toward the tail. You should be able to feel (but not see) his ribs. If your dog “flunks,” it’s time to help him drop a few pounds.
