Tennessee motorists would risk getting ticketed for letting pets sit in their laps while driving under a local lawmaker’s bill that passed the House Transportation Committee on Tuesday, reports the Chattanooga Times Free Press.
Banning Roadside Animal Sales
The Ouachita Parish (Louisiana) Police Jury did its part this week in moving toward a ban of roadside animal sales. We’ve all seen vendors selling puppies along roadsides and parking lots. They’re often irresistible. Unfortunately, many of them also wind up as unwanted adult dogs, contributing to a population explosion that leads to 7,000 unwanted pets being euthanized each year at the Ouachita Parish Animal Shelter, reports the Monroe (La.) Star News.
Dog Day Afternoons Can Be Lonely for Pets
One of the largest-ever studies of pet well-being, animal welfare experts report that virtually a quarter of dogs are being left alone so long, so often, that they’re at very real risk of loneliness, distress, depression and separation anxiety. The newly published research finds 23 percent of canine owners in the United Kingdom leave their dog unattended for five hours or longer on a typical weekday, or don’t bother to monitor the time at all; fully one-third of those aged 18 to 24 do so, compared with just 10 per cent of owners 55 or older, reports the Montreal Gazette.
Calgary Woman Guilty of Puppy Neglect
A Calgary woman has been fined $1,000 after admitting she was responsible for the neglect of a 3-month-old Doberman puppy found critically injured outside a vet hospital, reports the Edmonton (Alberta, Canada) Journal.
