US Airways Flight Diverts After Dog Bites Two on Board
After a dog got loose on a US Airways flight and bit a passenger and flight attendant, the incident prompted the pilot to divert the Newark-to-Phoenix flight to Pittsburgh for an emergency landing although injuries were minor. “The captain felt in the interest of safety, it was better to land and have them looked at than continue on,” a US Airways spokesman says, USA Today reports.

Rescuer Falls Through Ice Trying to Reach Dog
Crews had to pull a firefighter to safety after he fell through the ice while trying to reach a dog from a northeastern Indiana lake. Orland, Ind., firefighters were called Sunday by the owners of the dog after it walked onto the half-inch ice of Lake Pleasant and fell in. Firefighter Mike Garrison inched out while wearing full rescue gear but the ice gave way with temperatures in the 20s, Chicago Tribune reports.

County Auditor Warns of Scam Aimed at Dog Owners
A dog-license scam is targeting pet owners just as they are receiving legitimate dog-license renewal reminders from counties across the state. Medina County, Ohio, Auditor Mike Kovac warned of the new scam Monday, after a woman reported giving her bank account number to a caller who purported to be from the auditor’s office. The caller told her the county could issue her dog’s license faster if she agreed to have the fees automatically withdrawn from her bank account, reports.

Shelter Flush With Dog House Donations Still Needs Other Items
Dogs living outside at the Pender County Animal Shelter in North Carolina now have shelter from the wind. Thanks to an overwhelming response, every dog now has his own house. Last week the shelter needed 40 dog houses to comply with state law. Thanks to all of the donations, the shelter has more than enough houses, but it still needs blankets, towels and food, WWAY-TV, reports.
