The Crufts 2013 Dog Show Begins March 7

On March 7-10, 2013, more than 20,000 dogs will compete for Best in Show at Crufts, one of the largest dog shows in the world.

The Crufts 2013 dog show, one of the largest dog shows in the world, will take place at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham, England, on March 7-10, 2013. More than 25,000 dogs will attend, including 20,566 dogs participating in Breed judging, Gamekeepers’ classics and Obedience Championships. A record number of foreign dogs will attend: 2,131 dogs from 41 countries. More than 145,000 visitors are expected at the National Exhibition Centre.

This year new breeds will be allowed to compete at Crufts. A total of 145 dogs in 13 breeds, breeds that don’t yet qualify for classes of their own, will be able to compete in the Imported Register classes. Dogs that win Best Import will not be able to compete in the Group. These 13 breeds include:

  • Basset Bleu de Gascogne
  • Bavarian Mountain Hound
  • Beauceron
  • Bergamasco
  • Catalan Sheepdog
  • Cirneco dell’Etna
  • Eurasier
  • Greater Swiss Mountain Dog
  • Korean Jindo
  • Lagotto Romagnolo
  • Swedish Lapphund
  • Mexican Hairless
  • Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer

In addition to the more than 20,000 dogs competing in conformation at Crufts, more dogs will participate in agility, heelwork to music, flyball and other competitions. Discover Dogs, which is similar to the AKC’s Meet the Breeds events, will teach visitors to the show more about the breeds that would best fit their lifestyle. The informal Scruffts Family Crossbreed Dog of the Year will take place with Mixed Breeds on Friday, March 8 (titles in this competition include “Most Handsome Dog,” “Prettiest Bitch,” “Child’s Best Friend” and “Golden Oldie”).

American audiences not traveling to England can watch live streaming on the Crufts YouTube channel or on the Eukanuba European YouTube channel. The show will take place from 8:15 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. GMT daily. Terrier and Hound Groups will be judged Thursday, March 7; Toy and Utility Groups will be judged Friday, March 8; Gundogs will be judged Saturday, March 9; Working and Pastoral Groups, and Best in Show judging will take place Sunday, March 10. Fans of the show can also follow the Kennel Club on Twitter and Crufts on Facebook.
