The Best Reason to Lose at the Oscars

Academy Awards "losers” will take home a swag bag filled with meals for homeless pets and a lot of good karma.

As part of Oscar tradition, nominees in the top categories receive elaborate gift bags filled with expensive items that companies hope celebrities might use and endorse. This year’s “Everyone Wins at the Oscars” gift bags are worth $85,000 and are filled with everything from vacation packages and Maple Trees to $6,100 worth of dog food.

Halo donation Oscars

In hopes of infusing the Oscars with charitable spirit, host Ellen DeGeneres’ pet food company, Halo, Purely for Pets, in partnership with, is giving 20 non-winning Oscar nominees 10,000 meals of natural pet food to donate to the animal shelter or rescue of the celebrity’s choice.

While the Halo and gift makes a notable departure from the typical expensive gift bag products geared toward leisure time and pampering, it’s one of the most unique and expensive items in the gift bag.
“We know many celebrities are extremely generous,” says David Yaskulka, Halo’s vice president of marketing communications. “So we decided to gift them with something different that we think will mean a lot to them. We’re looking forward to making those donations!”

Well known for its year-round philanthropic efforts, Halo, Purely for Pets partners with to donate more than 1.5 million meals to shelter pets each year.

Also appealing to dog owning celebrities are a few other dog-friendly treats including $1,571.98 of supplies from Epic Pet Health, including a year’s supply of an electrolyte supplement made for pets and a $15 organic pet shampoo from Simon’s Happy Pet.
