If you believe gushing, blushing brides and any number of commemorative picture frames, a couple’s wedding day is the happiest day of their lives. But for Cassidy Williams it was also bittersweet.

Just a month before her special day, Williams found out her family’s beloved Golden Retriever, Dood, had terminal bone cancer, CNN reports. In an effort to make the most of his last days, Williams and her family came up with a plan to include Dood in her wedding on the Oregon coast, which would also be the 5-year-old dog’s first time at the ocean.

Williams’ dad cancelled his flight and drove Dood from the family home in Utah to Manzanita, Oregon, where Williams’ wedding would be held. The trip, which took 13 hours, marked Dood’s first trip outside of the state — and it allowed him to serve as ring bearer and to put his paws in the Pacific Ocean for the first (and, sadly, last) time.

“He was so happy, he had so much energy,” Williams told CNN. “He did a fantastic job as the ring bearer.”

And Dood made it into a few of those wedding photos. Those deserve a special picture frame, too.
