They are the oddest of couples. One is an emblem of violence and lawlessness, of everything awry in American society. The other is a greeting-card image of furry innocence, radiating promise, optimism, and unsullied loyalty.
Together they have forged a bond that has existed in the human-canine DNA for millennia, one that transcends steel bars, barbed wire, and guard towers, and returns some of society’s most isolated and ostracized members to a long-lost place of pride within themselves.
