Although small in stature, the Swedish Vallhund packs a big bark, says Sarah K., who shows Swedish Vallhunds and is president of the Swedish Vallhund Club of America. The breed uses its vocal skills to herd livestock — a trait that suburban neighbors might not appreciate.
“Vallhunds bark, and then bark some more, and then they follow that up with a little barking,” says Sarah, who lives in the Midwest with her champion dogs. “My Vallhunds will alert me if there’s a squirrel in the front yard. They will alert me if the neighbor shuts his car door. They’re very alert and in tune with things going on around them. They are true farm dogs, and they are true herding dogs, so they do bark.”
