Surfs Up!

The largest surfing dog contest in the country hits the beach on September 25.

Helen Woodward Animal Center will host the 6th annual Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon, presented by Eukanuba, on September 25, 2011 at Dog Beach in Del Mar, CA from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

At 8:30 a.m. get ready to have fun in the sun as 80 dogs hit the waves to raise awareness of and money for orphaned pets while promoting responsible pet ownership. Internet surf sensations Ricochet, Nani, Dozer and Buddy will join their canine friends to compete in four weight classes throughout the day. The Surf Dog competition will be judged by some of top riders from Volcom, other pros and surfing aficionados.

Don’t miss the “Doo the Dah” competition where both people and their pets take to the waves in costume, performing ridiculous stunts and a Beach Bum and Bikini Babe Costume. Both will be judged by a panel of celebrity judges including: Tyana Alvarado from “The Apprentice,” Craig Silke from “The Mole,”  Dennis Luciani from “Average Joe,” Mark Munoz and Michael Munoz from “Amazing Race” and Gillian Larson from “Survivor.”

Located in San Diego, Helen Woodward Animal Center is a unique, private, non-profit organization dedicated to saving the lives of animals and enriching the lives of people. For more than 30 years the no-kill animal center has provided humane care and animal adoption for orphaned animals, as well as animal-centered educational and therapeutic programs for people.

Vendor booths include some of the top brands of pet products and surf gear as well as other San Diego favorites will be available. Attendees will also get a sneak peak at professional surfer Guy Takayama’s newly-designed “Surfah dog” surf boards made especially for your four-legged friend.
