Wondering where you can find items to help prepare you and your family to shelter in place? Sometimes it is as easy as a trip to your local Costco or other store. While not inexpensive, purchasing a single item during each trip will help you stock your disaster preparedness cabinet. Preparedness may mean the difference between life and death. It can also help you be more comfortable as you care for those in your home, including your pets. Here are some items to consider having on hand.
Get A Water Source
First, you need water. You cannot live without it and if you don’t have access to drinking water, you won’t need to worry about the rest of the items as you won’t be around to use them!
1) Water purifier
One that you might want to check out is the Crown Berkey® Stainless Water Purifier with Black Berkey® Purifying Elements. The least expensive option provides 12 to 15 gallons of water per day. This is a very expensive item and is not something the average ferret owner or ferret shelter could afford. This water filtering system is used by missionaries in third world countries. It turns nasty river water into drinking water.
Because this water purifier is so expensive, you may want to start out with something that costs a bit less. However, this company also runs sales, and you may be able to get a better price if you watch for them.
2) Shelf Reliance 55-gallon Barrel Water Storage System (Make sure you have a pump and a siphon to get the water out.)
Food Grade Water Barrel, Siphon Pump, Bung Wrench & Water Treatment Solution, Item # 557901
3) Since water weighs about 7 pounds per gallon, a drum dolly will make it easier to move the full water barrel around. Here is one that will hold up to 1,000 pounds.
Stay in Touch
1) Emergency Weather Radio
One to check out is the Oregon Scientific WR602N Portable Public Alert Weather Radio with SAME technology

2) A regular radio with a handcrank
One suggestion is the Kaito® Green Voyager™

Model #: IN CL L530. This handcrank flashlight radio also gives you the ability to charge cell phones.
3) A solar charger
This item can be found in most outfitters, such as REI. One to check out is the Berkey Multi-Purpose Solar Charger with internal NiMH battery pack. It charges the Berkey Light LED base and a diverse array of other devices from flashlights to cell phones.
