Striving To Make The Ferret Squad Movie

Will director/producer Alison Parker realize her dream to film a full-length ferret movie?

Ferrets are furry, cute pets, but the state of California is one of the few places in the United States that outlaws them as pets. Canadian filmmaker and ferret owner Alison Parker is using the power of movies to present the case for ferrets.

Parker’s first foray into ferret films was Jake And Jasper: A Ferret Tale. Released in 2011, this short film tells the story of a boy being helped by a ferret to overcome an emotionally difficult time.

In 2012, Parker began fundraising in the hope of creating a full-length feature titled The Ferret Squad. This movie focuses on ferrets being illegal to own in California, and what happens when a boy who owns one moves there and meets up with a group of children who call themselves The Ferret Squad. The group rescues and fosters abandoned ferrets (even though ferrets are outlawed in California, plenty of people own them). But authorities find out about the ferrets, forcing the children to react.

Jake And Jasper was funded by an IndieGoGo crowdfunding campaign, but a similar campaign for The Ferret Squad fell short of the $50,000 goal. This has not stopped Parker.

“I used the money raised to film a Proof of Concept trailer instead,” Parker said. “Now I am using this trailer to get the attention of major producers and production companies and aiming much higher. The budget now could be anywhere from $200,000 to $1.5 million.”

Parker said she’s had some interest from producers and hopes an announcement might be coming soon.

Meanwhile, Parker continues to post updates on The Ferret Squad Facebook page and drum up support. The trailer was posted to YouTube on December 10, 2012, and has more than 6,700 views.

The Ferret Squad is a professional production that reunites Parker with Connor Stanhope, her star from Jake And Jasper, and Blu Mankuma, who played the principal in Jake And Jasper. Other cast members include Chad Willett, Julia Benson, Gabrielle Rose, Cainan Wiebe, Dylan Schmid and more — including Falcor, Parker’s ferret who plays Digger in the film. The screenplay is by Sally Meyer, who has written numerous family movies. Parker is a director, producer, editor who has been working in the film industry for more than 10 years.
