Any of you who attended past ferret symposiums, ferret shows or ordered ferret supplies through FerretDepot.com likely met, spoke with or heard of Steve Yarbrough. He was a relaxed, positive presence at events, working the Ferret Depot vendor table and having a ready smile for anyone who stopped by. At the 2011 Ferret Symposium in Phoenix, he was presented with an award by the International Ferret Congress in recognition of industry leadership in support and protection of ferrets and ferret shelters.
I was shocked today when I read the Ferret Mailing List and learned that Steve Yarbrough passed away on June 19. He was 54 and is survived by his wife and son. Since the post in the FML, many members of the ferret community are leaving a message on the tribute wall of his obituary page through the funeral home and the guest book at Legacy.com.
Reading some of the messages reveals the kindness of the man and the loss to the community.
“You will be so terribly missed, not only by the ferret community as a whole, but by each and every individual you helped. You were a wonderful and caring man who left this world way too soon. May your family find peace in knowing how much you were loved and respected by so many people. Thank you for all you did. RIP” — June Phipps
“Just yesterday I learned of the death of a man who has been such a great friend to all in the ferret community. I recall seeing Steve at every International Ferret Congress symposium. He donated raffle and door prize items and FerretDepot.com was always a sponsor. He helped individuals and always discounted shelter orders. When I moved to Alaska, Steve worked with me to lower shipping costs and then offered the same to others who lived here. It was always so nice to hear his voice, This is Steve. In 2011 he received an IFC Special Achievement Award in recognition of all he has done for the ferret community. He was a good man and he will be missed. I am so sorry he didn’t get to spend more time with his family on this Earth, but know that he made the most of his time on Earth. We know that any little ferrets waiting at the Rainbow Bridge will surely recognize this man who gave so much on their behalf before he passes over to his reward. Vaya con Dios, Steve. I am better for having known you.” — Renee Downs
“Our condolences to the family & friends of this wonderful man. Steve was an angel in his dealings with the ferret community and will be deeply missed. I know in my heart he is surrounded by the light that never dims and I am certain he is keeping an ever loving watchful eye out on all of us he’s left behind. His giving nature resounds still thru the lives he helped. Whenever needed he gave to the ferret community with such an open heart. He touched thousands of lives, never hesitating when the call for help came.
RIP Steve.” — Debbie, Big Lick Ferret Shelter & Hospice
