Southern California Bunny Bunch Picnic 2013

It’s time for fun at the annual Bunny Bunch Picnic in Irvine, California.

If it’s May, the Bunny Bunch Picnic in Southern California must be happening soon — and it is. This weekend, in fact. Sunday, May 19, 2013, is the date for this year’s Bunny Bunch Picnic. It’s the fourth year for this annual event, and it continues to grow. Rabbit (and guinea pig) owners and enthusiasts get together for fun, education, and rabbit and guinea pig stories.

As in previous years, the Bunny Bunch Boutique will be at the picnic offering plenty of shopping opportunities to get your rabbit something, plus items for bunny owners as well. For a donation of $20, you can treat your rabbit to the bunny spa and photo shoot. If you’re unsure how to groom your bunny, this is a chance to see nail trims, brushing and other grooming necessities done quickly and gently. Afterward your pet will be ready for his or her close-up with the camera, and you’ll have a great photo of your pet and memento from the event.

It is a picnic, so bunny snacks are available for purchase, as is lunch for owners. New this year is the pizza lunch happening around 1 p.m. After lunch, Dr. Sari Kanfer of the Exotic Animal Care Center in Pasadena, California, will give a talk about rabbit health issues. Picnickers usually get the opportunity to ask rabbit health questions, too.

Also new this year is a carrot and banana eating contest. If your bun is a carrot or banana eating champ, this is your chance to show off your pet’s prowess. A bunny playground adds to the fun for the day.

If you plan to attend with your rabbit, bring your pet in a carrier or stroller for safe travel to and from the event. You must also bring an exercise pen with an umbrella or some other shade equipment so that your bunny can lounge in safety on the lawn between activities. A litter box and water in your rabbit’s preferred container (bottle or bowl) are must-have items, too. If it’s hot that day, bring bottles of frozen water to help keep your pet cool. The current forecast is for the mid-70s.

The Bunny Bunch Picnic takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the lawn at the Irvine Animal Care Center in Irvine, California, at 6443 Oak Canyon. Construction on the nearby 5 freeway has closed the Sand Canyon exit, so the Bunny Bunch has provided detour directions. The Bunny Bunch, a nonprofit rescue and education organization, started the picnic in 2010.

The Irvine Animal Care Center has bunnies available for adoption in its Bunny Yard, so it’s possible you might find a rabbit friend who’s compatible with your bunny.

If this sounds like too much fun to pass up, be sure to RSVP that you will attend. The Bunny Bunch picnic flier has contact information.
