Snake Falls Out Of Ceiling At Mississippi Elementary School

The school likely missed out on a teachable moment about the importance of snakes near farmland.

Walls Elementary School in Mississippi is surrounded by farmland and those fields have critters in them, so it is no wonder that a snake had found its way onto the school grounds, but what is really peculiar is where the snake made its appearance.

The snake, identified as a gray rat snake, a harmless non-venomous reptile that most likely eats the rats in the farmland next to the school, fell through a ceiling and landed next to a teacher’s desk.

While some were concerned a snake found its way into a classroom, one man who has a grandchild at the school was not surprised at all of their presence.

“They’re plowing this time of year and it makes the snakes and frogs and everything else move out of the area,” John Thompson told WMC Action News 5.

Parents and teachers say the measures that school officials are taking to keep them off the property are seemingly not working, according to WMC Action News 5. The DeSoto County Schools paid a pest control company to have snake repellent sprayed on the school grounds in hopes of keeping the snakes away and also searched the school building for more snakes. None apparently were found.

The snake, according to WMC Action News 5 reporter Janice Broach, was “expelled, getting the death penalty.” If true, then the school missed out on a valuable teachable moment about the important ecological role that snakes, and especially gray rat snakes play in the farming community in which the school is located.

  • Wow, nice lesson we are teaching the impressionable children at the school by killing the harmless snake. “Getting the death penalty?” Really? Any particular reason that poor snake could not have been just let outside to where it belongs? You know, it’s actual habitat where you built your school and parking lot on?

  • With educational choices like this one, is it any wonder we are raising generations without empathy or understanding of the world they inhabit? Let’s keep teaching fear and violence instead of ecology and evolution, because that will work out well…

  • Instead of killing the poor thing, couldn’t they have let it outside? People should learn that not all snakes are terrible beings that are venomous. All i want for people is to learn that snakes are very important to the ecosystem and shouldn’t be killed.
