Small Animal Pets Celebrate The Pluto Flyby

When history is made, even rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and other small animal pets get in on the celebrating.

When history is made, even rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and other small animal pets get in on the celebrating.

July 14, 2015, is the day the space probe New Horizons made its closest approach to Pluto, flying by at a mere 7,800 miles. Most airplanes cruise at 5.6 to 7.5 miles above the Earth, so that’s almost a thousand times farther up than a plane, but it’s way closer than we’ve ever been. After all, Pluto is about three BILLION miles away from Earth. It’s really an accomplishment.

And even small animal pets are taking note.

1. These bunnies are all set for the Pluto viewing party!

2. The moment a ferret realizes how momentous a day it is, now that New Horizons did a flyby of Pluto.

3. Flyby, check! Now it’s time to explore, and this hamster has his Pluto-rover ready to go.

4. A chinchilla hooray. New Horizons made it to Pluto!

5. In a moment of quiet contemplation, these rats realize they weren’t even born when the New Horizons’ mission to Pluto began in 2006.

6. Pluto, I eat this carrot in your honor.

7. Decisions, decisions. What’s a rabbit to wear to a Pluto viewing party?
