The World Pet Association’s 22nd annual America’s Family Pet Expo, held April 15 to 17 in Costa Mesa, Calif., resulted in a record number of dog and cat adoptions, organizers reported today. A total of 682 dogs, cats and other animals were adopted from local dog and cat shelters at this year’s event, breaking last year’s record of 668 adoptions.
In addition to animal adoptions, the event featured a number of exhibitors of dog and cat products and pet-related services and more than 1,000 dog, cats and other animals in educational exhibits, demonstrations, competitions and entertaining performances.
The number of visitors who attended this year’s event is not yet available. Last year’s event drew more than 37,000 visitors.
“This year’s America’s Family Pet Expo was a great success, not only because we once again achieved another year of record-breaking adoptions, but because we continued the World Pet Association’s mission of educating consumers about responsible pet care and bringing a pet into your family that complements your lifestyle,” said WPA president Doug Poindexter. “We are looking forward to returning to Orange County (California) next year and continue to be a bridge in the community helping even more pets find forever homes.”
This year, WPA donated 134 booth spaces to local dog and cat shelters and rescues to help the organizations place homeless dogs and cats. The event resulted in the adoption of 563 dogs, 88 cats, 12 rats, seven guinea pigs, seven chinchillas and five rabbits, according to WPA. Adoption sponsor VCA Animal Hospitals provided newly adoptive parents certificates for a free first exam. Including 2011’s adoption numbers, America’s Family Pet Expo has helped more than 7,080 animals find homes since 1996.
This year’s entertainment lineup included Jump! The Ultimate Dog Show, police and search dog demonstrations and Joe Krathwohl’s Free Flight Bird Show. New to the show was the Aquatic Experience exhibit, which featured an array of fish donated by Segrest Farms of Gibsonton, Fla. The exhibit included a touch tank to encourage hands-on education and examples of how to incorporate aquaria in the home.
