Gabe is a Golden Retriever, a devoted service dog and was recently honored with the role of best man at his owner’s wedding.

The 5-year-old pooch served as best man to U.S. Army veteran Justin Lansford this weekend, ABC News reports. The two were paired together after Lansford lost his left leg in an IED explosion in Afghanistan in 2012.

At the time, a 2-year-old Gabe had just graduated from the Warrior Canine Connection program, which pairs wounded warriors with canine companions in an effort to reduce symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder, according to ABC News.

Gabe went from man’s best friend to best man this past Saturday when he stood beside Lansford during the Army vet’s wedding to longtime girlfriend Carol Balmes. He even accompanied the newly married couple down the aisle.

Judging from the wedding photos, it looks like Gabe did a stellar job — even if he couldn’t exactly give a best man’s speech.
