Ciao, cats.

Before you head to the shore this beach season, pack your hat, towel, catnip mouse and laser toy because the only real place to see sand and surf is at a beach full of cats.

I Gatti di Su Pallosu cat sanctuary in Sardinia has been named the top tourist destination on the island by TripAdvisor, according to The Local. The sanctuary recently received a certificate of excellence from the travel site based on the high amount of five-star reviews it’s received.

“People love cats and they love beaches too, so it’s a recipe for success,” founder Andrea Atzori, who opened the non-profit with his wife in 2011, told The Local. He told the news outlet that 11,000 visitors, mostly from abroad, have come to the cat sanctuary.

Colonies of cats have lived on the Su Pallosu beach since local tuna fishermen imported cats to tackle the local rodent problem more than 100 years ago, according to the The Local.

Today there are some 60 felines living at the sanctuary, at least half of which are the descendants of the fishermen’s original cats.

“People are curious because they assume cats hate water, but the Su Pallosu cats grew up on the shore and have no fear of the sea,” Atzori told the news outlet.

“They are also super tame and friendly so know how to entertain visitors.”
