Salmonella Threat Leads To Widespread Pet Food Recall

Four brands of Natura pet food -- California Natural, EVO, Innova and HealthWise — are included in recall.

UPDATE: As of April 19, 2013, Natura Pet Products expanded its previous recall of some dry food and treats for ferrets, dogs and cats. This is being done out of an abundance of caution because of possible Salmonella contamination. The products affected include the brands Innova, EVO, California Natural, HealthWise and Karma. All of these products with expiration dates on or before March 24, 2014 are included in the recall. For complete inforrmation, visit the Natura Pet Products website.

Natura Pet Products on Monday, March 18, 2013, voluntarily recalled selected lots of California Natural, EVO, Innova and HealthWise dry pet foods because of potential Salmonella contamination.

The affected products are sold in bags through veterinary clinics, pet specialty retailers and online in the United States, Canada, Korea, Malaysia, Japan, Hong Kong and Costa Rica.

One EVO ferret food was recalled. The other identified foods are dog and cat formulas.

No Salmonella-related illnesses were reported, noted Fremont, Nebraska-based Natura, a division of Procter & Gamble. Symptoms of Salmonella poisoning in pets include lethargy, diarrhea, fever and vomiting. People who handle contaminated pet products may exhibit similar symptoms.

The recalled foods, which bear specific UPC and lot codes, were produced in a single plant during two weeks in December 2012. Routine testing by the Michigan Department of Agriculture showed the presence of Salmonella in food collected from one store.

Pet owners are advised to discard the recalled food. Information about replacement food or a refund is available by calling 800-224-6123 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. CDT Monday through Friday.

A complete list of the recalled foods is available at Natura’s website.
