Salmonella: (noun) Salmonella is the genus name of an organism that is a gram-negative bacteria. The disease is called salmonellosis. Of the more than 2,000 Salmonella species, only a few cause disease in pet birds. Some infected birds show symptoms and others don’t but carry it. Symptoms are lethargy, fluffed up appearance, loss of weight. Sick birds transmit the bacteria to other birds by contact and fecal contamination by food and water. Salmonellosis is a zoonosis, which means in can transmit from birds to people, so follow good hygiene practices. It can kill your pet bird so take a sick bird to an avian veterinarian for culture and sensitivity testing.
