One word comes to mind when hearing Zuzu’s story: heartbreaking. Not only can you hear her story, you can watch the moment when she goes through rejection and abandonment.
A video posted to Facebook shows the German Shepherd Dog as her owners greet her then pass her up to find a different dog at the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control’s shelter in Downey, California, this week.
In the video, posted by one of the department’s workers, Zuzu lights up at the sight of her owners as they walk next to a dog run in which she’s fenced with other dogs at the facility, only to see them walk away and not return.

“She looked like the happiest dog. Yeah, she’s going home,” Desi Lara wrote in the Facebook post.
“But no,” she followed. “Talking to her owners they told me they were not here to reclaim her, they were getting another dog”
According to Lara, poor Zuzu’s father, another GSD, passed away recently, and Zuzu had been crying over the loss. She ran away from home and got into her neighbor’s yard, and the unhappy neighbor called animal control, which brought her to the Downey facility.
“And her owners were going to let her stay here,” Lara continued in her post. “Their reason was because she was crying and sad since her father passed away. She wasn’t a happy dog anymore. Their solutions for her unhappiness was just leaving her here! And go get another dog.”
Zuzu’s story is a sad one, and it shows how some people consider dogs disposable parts of their home. But there is a bright side to Zuzu’s plight.
The latest news Lara posted says a rescue has agreed to take Zuzu. She will leave Downey on Friday, the first day that she is legally allowed to be adopted, and go where she can find a family that will treat her just like that: family.
