We are never without some level of stress. It might be traffic that stresses us out, or the warm weather in the middle of fall. We could be stressed due to work or school or bills we have to pay. Many Americans are stressed about the presidential election happening tomorrow, November 8. In talking with friends, family and coworkers, I’ve heard people say they know exactly who they’re going to vote for and believe in their hearts it’s the right choice. I’ve heard others say they have no idea who to vote for because to them neither candidate is a good choice. Most, though, are very concerned about the outcome and are subsequently feeling weighed down by stress. It can be overwhelming.
So how do we deal with it? With meditation and cats, of course.
Blue Cross of the United Kingdom posted a video on YouTube called “Karma Kitties,” encouraging viewers to use kitten meditation as a means of relieving stress. This guided meditation cat video “features an adorable cast of homeless cats and kittens cared for at our rehoming centers, all showcasing their innate therapeutic powers. Through specific imagery and sounds of cats purring, playing, sleeping and snoozing, the guided class allows the viewer to focus on, and pay attention to, the sensations, thoughts and emotions evoked by the pets,” Blue Cross UK posted on its website.
We figured it was worth a try, so on the eve of the election, we shut off and tuned out all things having to do with politics. Then we put our headphones on and watched the video. Sure, our minds wandered from time to time, but we were always able to bring the focus back to cute cats playing, purring and kneading.
The hope, according to the site, is that the video will not only help us relieve stress, but also show the plight of rescue cats. And really, don’t you want to take a break from all things election and focus on cute kitties for a bit?
We sure did. Kitten therapy is the best.
