When Leslie M. moved from an Indianapolis suburb to a rural town in southeast Tennessee, she got more than she bargained for. Shortly after she arrived in her new home, Gracie, her water-loving Border Collie mix, came down with a nasty intestinal bug probably caused by drinking water contaminated with dog waste.


“Gracie gets sort of manic about streams, ponds, and puddles of water,” says Leslie, the founder of, a blog for sustainable dog care. “She has to drink out of them. I didn’t think a lot about it, but two days after we arrived here, she got giardia. She went through two rounds of antibiotics, she had bloody diarrhea, she had to go out every hour. She was miserable.”
