She may have been born with a look only a mother could love, but now her uniqueness is melting hearts across the country.
A Pit Bull-Dutch Shepherd mix named Quasi Modo was crowned the 2015 World’s Ugliest Dog Friday at this year’s Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds in Petaluma, California. The short-spined dog from Loxahatcheee, Florida, beat out 26 other “ugly” dogs during the 27th year for the international contest.
“Facially she’s quite beautiful,” ABC News’ Nick Watt, a judge in the contest, explained during Quasi Modo’s appearance today on Good Morning America. “The side view is obviously kind of ridiculous. She’s half a dog.”
Quasi Modo was born with missing vertebrae, causing the hunchback appearance — not unlike a hyena — and was reportedly rescued by her owners from a Florida shelter.
“Quasi just stood out,” Watt added. “This dog is going to turn heads.”
Quasi Modo’s owner will take home a check for $1,500 along with smaller cash prizes and gifts, according to the fair’s website. The peculiar pooch, who was originally thought to be a male by contest officials, will participate in media tours in San Francisco and New York and receive a mutt makeover on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”
A Chinese Crested mix and a Chihuahua mix took the second- and third-place prizes, respectively. The first ever Spirit Award was presented to Precious, an 8-year-old Chihuahua from Petaluma, for visiting disabled veterans with her owner.
