Puppies Appear With Oprah on Cover of O Magazine

Her newly adopted Cocker Spaniel, Sadie, is featured along with several other pups.

Oprah Winfrey shares the June 2009 cover of O, The Oprah Magazine, with five dogs, including Sadie, the puppy she recently adopted from PAWS Chicago.

The photo shoot for the cover took place at PAWS, the city’s largest no-kill animal shelter. In addition to the cover shot, Winfrey also was photographed with her new dog in “Sophie’s Place,” a sponsor suite she dedicated to her Cocker Spaniel, according to her website.

Winfrey’s relationship with the animal shelter goes back to 2008, when she first featured it on her TV show for a series that called attention to homeless dogs and “puppy mills.”

On her website, Winfrey describes Sadie as the “runt” of her litter. “I love making the underdog a winner,” she says.

O Magazine’s June issue has been dedicated by Winfrey as “The Animals Issue” and features the phrase “For the Love of Dogs…” in bright pink text.

On an episode of her show slated that aired Friday, May 15, Winfrey welcomes award-winning actress Glenn Close, author of the “Lively Licks” blog. Close gives the audience a look at an organization called Puppies Behind Bars (PBB) and its initiative, Dog Tags: Service Dogs for Those Who’ve Served Us.

Under this program, prison inmates are trained to raise puppies to become service dogs for wounded veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
