Prince died at his Paisley Park estate in Chanhassen, Minnesota, today at the age of 57, the Associated Press reports. Born Prince Rogers Nelson, the iconic musician had several hits, including “Purple Rain,” “When Doves Cry,” “1999” and “Little Red Corvette.”

Besides being regarded as a highly skilled musician, Prince also was voted Sexiest Vegetarian Alive by PETA. He had a real empathy for animals, and in the liner notes of his 1999 album, “Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic,” he explained why a suit he wore on the cover was not made of wool. “2 my mind, the life of a lamb is no less precious than that of a human being,” he wrote, according to CBS News.

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to get through this thing called life. Electric word, life. It means forever and that’s a mighty long time. But I’m here to tell you there’s something else: the afterworld. – Prince, “Let’s Go Crazy”

He clearly possessed a love of animals… and animals love him, taking to Instagram to pay tribute to the late musician.

Prince was performing for his “Piano and a Microphone” tour, during which he played stripped down versions from his vast song library, right before his death. He will be greatly missed.
