Well, that was a close call! A man heroically came to the rescue of a falling dog — catching the airborne pooch after it fell 14 stories off of a balcony, KGW Portland reports.

Ted Nelson of Portland, Oregon, told the news station that he noticed a seemingly distressed dog on the balcony of a high-rise building across the street from his own building and immediately approached, worried that the dog was about to fall. The 5-year-old dog, named Mordy, had somehow climbed through the balcony railing and did indeed fall — 14 stories to be exact. But, thankfully, Nelson arrived just in time to catch the dog.

“I just looked up at it, and it was looking at me and it landed right in my chest… caught it for a minute, kind of fell, it did hit the ground,” Nelson told KGW. “It let out a yelp but it was a huge relief to hear it yelp.”

Mordy went to the vet and, aside from a couple bruises, appears to be in good shape.

The act was nothing short of heroic, and it’s not the first time Nelson has come to the aid of an animal. According to KGW, Nelson saw a cat about to fall off another balcony about a year ago. The owners were home, and Nelson was able to alert them before the cat fell.

“Hopefully that’s it,” Nelson told the station. “Hopefully there’s no more incidents.”

  • That pup needed a Puppy Bumper stuffed collar to keep him from falling off the balcony. That’s what they’re for!
