Poodle Tops List of New Yorkers’ Favorite Breeds

The American Kennel Club announces the 10 most popular registered dogs in the Big Apple.

Poodle New Yorkers' Favorite BreedsEver wondered what types of dogs are most favored by pet owners in one of America’s most glamorous cities? Well, the American Kennel Club has announced the Top 10 most popular AKC-registered dogs in the Big Apple for 2006.

Here’s a look at New York City’s recently released statistics as they compare to the rest of the country:

1. Poodle
2. Yorkshire Terrier
3. Labrador Retriever
4. Bulldog
5. Dachshund
6. Havanese
7. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
8. Golden Retriever (tied with No. 7)
9. Shih Tzu
10. Pug

Nationwide 2006
1. Labrador Retriever
2. Yorkshire Terrier
3. German Shepherd Dog
4. Golden Retriever
5. Beagle
6. Dachshund
7. Boxer
8. Poodle
9. Shih Tzu
10. Miniature Schnauzer

The increasingly popular Havanese shot up to the sixth spot in the Big Apple, but is ranked 38th on the national list.

The Bulldog ranked No. 6 in 2005, but moved on to fourth with New Yorkers in 2006. The Bulldog is ranked 12th on the national list. Among the least registered breeds in New York City, according to the AKC, are the Newfoundland, Dalmatian and Belgian Sheepdog.
