We almost thought we were incapable of being shocked by the cruelty, heartlessness and sheer malice that some people are capable of, and then we heard about little Fox.
Last Friday, Verline Bartheleny let the tiny Pomeranian out onto a grassy patch behind her Pembroke Pines, Florida, apartment complex, WSVN reports. When Bartheleny returned to call him back inside, he was gone. The next morning, a neighbor found 7-year-old Fox curled into a ball on the back porch, near where he was last seen. But instead of relief and a reunion with their beloved pet, the Bartheleny family discovered something tragic. Fox was dead, his body beneath a handwritten note that said: “We beat it 2 death lol hahaha” — complete with a demented-looking smiley face drawn beneath the letters.
“If someone could do that to a dog, just imagine what it could escalate to,” said Bartheleny told WSVN.
She took Fox’s body to a local veterinarian, who believed that the dog died a brutal, violent death. Fox reportedly had a broken spine, a broken jaw, cracked ribs, a ruptured stomach and most likely punctured lungs as well.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen a case like this in our city,” Pembroke Pines Police Major Carlos Bermudez told the news station.
The police department is investigating the crime and asks for anyone with information — even those who would like to remain anonymous — to call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
