There is a saying that “not all heroes are human.”

That phrase — turned hashtag — is one of several hashtags currently trending on social media following the death of a 7-year-old Belgian Malinois killed during the seven-hour siege on an apartment in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis Wednesday morning, reports USA Today. Also growing in shares are #RIPDiesel and #JeSuisChien, which translates to “I am a dog” in English.

Diesel took part in the raid, which resulted in the arrest of seven people who are suspects in Friday’s Paris attacks. Two others, including a female suicide bomber who detonated her explosives as police entered the apartment, reportedly were killed.

“Assault and explosives search dogs are indispensable in the missions of the operators of the raid,” Police Nationale tweeted in French, with a photo of Diesel.

Many others have taken to social media to praise the police dog‘s service and pay tribute.

Phone data and eyewitness statements led police to the apartment as part of the search for Abdelhamid Abaaoud, 27, a Belgian national who is believed to be the mastermind behind the Paris attacks that killed at least 129 people, USA Today reports. It is unclear whether he was in the apartment at the time of the raid, although some breaking news reports suggest he was killed during the police operation.
