Radio Systems Corp. of Knoxville, Tenn., has issued a voluntary recall of approximately 20,000 power adapters for its PetSafe-branded heated pet beds because they pose a fire risk.
The power adapters were sold with the PetSafe Heated Wellness Sleeper models PCU00-10911 (small), PCU00-10912 (medium) and PCU-10913 (large) at pet specialty stores, catalogs and online retailers from late 2006 through early 2010, according to the company.
When the adapter is removed from the bed, it can cause arcing between the coil spring covering the electrical wire and the metal connector, posing a fire and burn hazard to consumers, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Radio Systems said it has received three reports of melted power adapter connectors. No injuries or fires have been reported.
The Heated Wellness Sleepers were produced with hunter green, military blue and khaki covers and have a jacquard PetSafe logo stitched on the front. Additional product labels include the Radio Systems customer care phone number.
The recalled power adapters are identified by the markings “HON-KWANG,” “PLUG IN CLASS 2 TRANSFORMER,” and “MODEL NO: K12-800” and have a spring coil covering the length of the electrical wire. Power adapters without spring coils are not affected by this voluntary recall.
Consumers are urged to stop using the recalled product immediately and call Radio Systems Corp.’s customer care at 800-732-2677 for instructions on how to receive a free replacement power adapter with the return of the old power adapter.
Consumers may also mail their old power adapter to the following address with their name, address, phone number and other contact information, and Radio Systems will ship a new power adapter:
