Oprah Winfrey Says Goodbye to Dog

The media mogul’s Cocker Spaniel dies of kidney failure after months of declining health.

Sophie, Oprah Winfrey’s black Cocker Spaniel, has died of kidney failure at the age of 13.

“Everyone here is really sad,” a spokesperson for Harpo Productions told CelebrityDogWatcher.com. “Sophie was truly part of the Harpo family as well as Oprah’s.”

In the December issue of O, The Oprah Magazine, Winfrey discussed Sophie’s declining health, and revealed that she and longtime boyfriend Stedman Graham were “preparing for the inevitable.”

Winfrey owns another Cocker Spaniel named Solomon and several Golden Retrievers.

Winfrey’s Golden Retriever Gracie died last year after choking to death on a small plastic ball while walking with a dog walker at Winfrey’s Montecito, Calif., home.

Winfrey wrote in the August issue of O that she was “dazed, stunned, and crying” upon learning of 2-year-old Gracie’s death. But despite her sadness, Winfrey wrote, she took comfort in knowing that Gracie “did more living in two years than most dogs do in 12.”
