NYC Man Takes His Dying Dog On Epic Cross-Country Road Trip

Thomas Neil Rodriguez just wanted Poh, his terminally ill dog, to swim in the Pacific Ocean. So they traveled across the country to make it happen.

Thomas Neil Rodriguez and his dog have been together for almost 16 years, ever since he adopted little Poh as an 8-week old puppy. But of all the time they’ve shared, the last couple months might have been the most memorable.

In March, the pair set off on a 35-city, roughly 12,000-mile road trip throughout the United States, ABC News reports. Rodriquez decided to make the cross-country trek after his beloved mixed-breed pooch was diagnosed with several health problems.

“My assumption is that I don’t have very long with him,” Rodriguez told ABC News. “That’s what prompted the trips.”

The goal was to get Poh from their New York City home to the Pacific Ocean. But before Poh put his paws in that other ocean, the two of them — along with Rodriguez’ girlfriend — stopped at landmarks and attractions across the country, from the historic (the Lincoln Memorial, the Alamo) to the hilarious (The “Goonies” house in Oregon, Walter White’s faux New Mexico home). And — fortunately for armchair adventurers and animal lovers — Rodriguez shared their journey on a special Instagram account that he created just for Poh.

The heartwarming pair are back home in New York, and Rodriguez is still unsure how much time he’ll have with his best friend. He said that due to all of Poh’s health problems (which required a daily IV drip while they were on the road), he sometimes wondered whether the dog would make it through the entire trip.

“The unfortunate fact is that we’re all going to pass away,” Rodriguez told the New York Daily News. “I’m kind of determined to live it to the fullest with Poh.”

One of my favorite milestones from #pohthedogsbigadventure with @djneilarmstrong and @goumada. Getting to the end of Route 66, signifying that we made it all the across the country. This was already almost 2 months ago… And the trip we took started 10 weeks ago now. When my parents found out I was sick, it seemed like my ailments meant that I could go at any moment. But instead of just waiting at home, they brought me on this great adventure, and I think it brought me even more life, lifted up my spirits even more, so my body had no choice but to follow. We all have to live life to the fullest! Thank u mom and dad for not giving up #tbt #throwbackthursday #dog #cute #eyes #instagood #dogs_of_instagram #pet #pets #animal #animals #petstagram #petsagram #dogsitting #dogsofinstagram #ilovemydog #instagramdogs #nature #dogstagram #dogoftheday #lovedogs #lovepuppies #hound #adorable #doglover #instapuppy #instadog
