I just finished an article for the September 2009 issue of BIRD TALK magazine about how parrots seem to be drawn to the not-so-healthy-foods. (Some of you, like anyone with an Amazon parrot, might know the challenge of trying to get a pizza delivery box into the house without your parrot screeching its own version of “I’ve got dibs!”)
In the article, I also present my very unscientific theory on why some birds are crazy about take away food. In a nutshell, it’s all about the presentation. Take pizza for example. The doorbell rings and in comes the biggest foraging box the parrot has ever seen and it’s packed with food. And don’t even get me started on Chinese take-out … it comes with not one, but two soft-wood toys: chopsticks! Parrots know something got to be too good to pass up when even their people are foraging; that is, eating out of boxes instead of off of plates.
But who says parrots can’t have fun with healthy food? Willow, the African grey parrot, gives new meaning to eating whole foods: check it out here.
