Nonprofit Seeks Valentines for Dogs

Group aims to raise awareness about chained and penned dogs.

Dogs Deserve Better, a nonprofit working to help dogs living outside, has designated Feb. 7 to 14, 2007, “Have a Heart for Chained Dogs Week.” The organization has set a goal of delivering 8,000 Valentines to chained and penned dogs during its fifth annual event.

The group is raising awareness for chained and penned dogs by delivering Valentines, a brochure, and a dog treat coupon to dogs living outside throughout the United States and Canada. In 2006, the fourth annual “Have a Heart for Chained Dogs” campaign delivered upwards of 5,000 Valentines to chained or penned dogs.

“We were ecstatic last year to see an incredible response to our plea. We received a total of 5,971 Valentines from 119 different groups and individuals, along with some tremendously touching letters,” Dogs Deserve Better founder Tammy S. Grimes said.

Valentines are needed at the Dogs Deserve Better headquarters in Tipton, Penn., by Feb. 7. The group is also seeking coupons for free or low-cost dog treats to include with their packets.

Valentines or coupons can be mailed to P.O. Box 23, Tipton, PA 16684. For further details, e-mail, or call (814) 941-7447.
