New York’s Most Popular Dog Names

In a big city filled with the latest trends, it only makes sense that dog names would be trendy too.

I’ll be honest, I expected a bit more from you New York. In a place known for it’s diversity it was a bit of surprise to see how many people have a dog named “Max.” Don’t get me wrong, “Max” is a good, strong name and it literally means “the greatest,” but you’d think New Yorkers may want something a bit more unique. I’ll just assume Max and these other popular names have become a staple in the city, similar to the popularity of wearing dark colored clothing. Sometimes simple and classic just work.

Crain’s created a graphic showing the top 10 dog names in NYC based off of data collected by the NYC Department of Mental Health and Hygiene. The data is based on city’s dog licensing records of almost 100,000 dogs. It’s estimated that only 1 in 5 dogs are actually licensed so we can either assume that there are many more dogs named Max running around or that owners with dog’s named Max are more likely to register them.

Although Max won by a landslide, other names that topped the charts include “Bella,” which has seen a rise in baby and pet names since the rise of the twilight movies, “Lucky” which is another classic, followed by Rocky, Coco and Buddy. Others holding strong in the top 10 include Charlie, Princess, Lola and Lucy.

If you’re taking Max and Bella for a walk, you can use this interactive map to help you either find or avoid running into dogs of the same name.

The names popular in NYC are similar to trends across the country. In our DogChannel survey of names, “Angel” came in first for the ladies with “Bella” a close number two. For Boys, “Bear,” took the top spot with Buddy at number two and Lucky, Max and Rocky placing 8th, 9th, and 10th respectively.
