The FDA has approved a new drug to control postoperative pain in cats.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Novartis Animal Health Inc.’s Onsior (robenacoxib) Tablets in cats for the control of postoperative pain and inflammation associated with orthopedic surgery, ovariohysterectomy and castration.

The indication is for cats weighing at least 5.5 pounds and at least six months of age, for up to a maximum of three days.

Each tablet contains 6 mg robenacoxib.

Limitations as put forth by the FDA: Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.
