New Apartment Amenity: Cat

Tokyo Cat Guardian partners with Japanese landlords to offer a cat with your new apartment or condo.

Apartments in Japan are different than in the United States; most Japanese apartments don’t come with lighting, much less a stove or refrigerator. If you want those types of creature comforts, you’ll need to fork over your own cash. If you’d like a furry little friend with your apartment, however, cat protection group Tokyo Cat Guardian has a program for you. They have joined forces with many landlords and future tenants in Tokyo to place shelter cats into a loving new home through a program called Cat Mansion .

Tokyo Cat Guardian member Yoko Yamamoto noticed that a lot of places in Tokyo had started accepting pets. According to, Yamamoto thought that if renters are attracted to apartments that accept pets, than would getting a pet with the apartment be even more enticing? The initiative now includes 20 properties in Tokyo, Kanagawa and Saitama Prefectures in Japan. In fact, Yamamoto says real estate agents are now contacting her to partner.

After the initial screening, interested applicants go through an interview. If the interview goes well, you’re welcome to then go to one of the Tokyo Cat Guardian shelters and fall in love with whosever’s whiskers tickle your fancy first. The gifts don’t stop there! Tokyo Cat Guardian also offers lectures and study sessions to learn how to take care of your new best friend.

If you’d like, you can choose to foster a cat until he or she is adopted instead of owning a cat. For the cat’s safety in mind, no modifications of the apartment are allowed. No fan ventilation or pet screen doors will ensure kitty’s safety in the massive and busy city of Tokyo. And should you need advice on how to take care of your cat, there’s a 24-hour hotline. Some of the apartments are cat-themed, with full runaround shelves along the top of the walls for your cat to get some exercise, as well as shelves placed in ways so that your cat can move around and find a comfy spot to get some sun or just relax in his or her new pad.
