Nationwide Dog and Cat Food Drive Calls for Volunteers and Donations

The Petco annual pet food drive starts Oct. 28, and has begun to recruit volunteers and donations

San Diego-based Petco and the Petco Foundation are looking for volunteers to help with the organizations’ third annual National Pet Food Drive for cats and dogs, which runs Oct. 28 through Nov. 11, 2012.

Dog and cat lovers can register at to volunteer at any Petco store nationwide, including all Unleashed by Petco locations.

“We’re counting on the extra help from pet lovers across the country who are willing to volunteer to help raise awareness for this important program,” said Paul Jolly, Petco Foundation’s executive director.

Petco and the foundation have collected and donated more than 1.5 million pounds of dog and cat food and cat litter to families in need since the national food bank program began in 2010, Jolly added.

Volunteers may help on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays — Oct. 28 and Nov. 2, 3, 4, 9, 10 and 11. All will be trained on how to reach out to people in support of donations.

Volunteers are asked at registration to select a Petco store and a convenient time. Each volunteer will receive a $5 Petco coupon and a chance to win a $500 Petco shopping spree.

“Helping to energize people to donate food for animals who might otherwise go hungry gives me an immeasurable sense of pride,” said Kenn Agata, a Best Friends Animal Society volunteer who donated his time last year at a Petco store in College Park, N.Y.
