Missing A Sock Or Some Underwear? This Cat Probably Stole It

Brigit has swiped a dozen pairs of undies and almost 50 socks from her neighborhood.

The residents of one New Zealand neighborhood might need to apologize to their washing machines. If they’ve recently accused their appliances of eating their socks or underwear, then they definitely need to say “I’m sorry,” because a cat named Brigit was probably to blame.

Sarah Nathan’s 6-year-old Tonkinese cat has stolen so many socks — and so many pairs of boxer briefs — that she’s started leaving letters in her neighbors’ mailboxes.

“It’s an absolute obsession,” Nathan told the New Zealand Herald. “A night does not go by without her bringing things home. I got up this morning and there were another four socks in the house.”

Brigit has been stealing the neighbors’ unmentionables for the past two months, and has accumulated a collection of almost a dozen pairs of underpants (“It’s all men’s,” Nathan said. “She’s got really specific taste.”) and close to 50 socks. Nathan said that she is soon moving to the country, but before she goes, she wants to return Brigit’s haul to their rightful owners. She has posted flyers and has written about it on Facebook, in the hopes that someone — or a lot of someones — will come forward to claim their assorted socks or underwear.

“I feel so bad about it,” she said. “Someone is spending a fortune on underwear.”
