Meet the Breeds

Having just written a Web news item for, I’ve finally decided: I’m going to the Meet the Breeds show in Manhattan. It’s going on October 17 and 18 and organizers say it will showcase 41 cat breeds and 160 dog breeds. I have never been to a dog or cat show of any kind (just trade shows for products), so I’m very excited.

The American Kennel Club and the Cat Fanciers’ Association are teaming up for this event, which will take place at the Jacob K. Javits Center, which is a huge convention hall in New York. It seems like a great thing to do on a fall day if you love animals.

According to a press release, breeds will each be presented in their own booths, with backdrops reflecting their countries of origin and breed characteristics. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about each breed and about dogs and cats in general. For example, the press release promises visitors will learn what kind of dogs George Washington bred.

Organizers are also promoting demonstrations at the event which will educate visitors about various activities they can do with their pets, such as agility training, which is of great interest to me since it’s something I’m hoping to do with the Boxer I’m hoping to bring into my family very soon.

Unlike other dog and cat shows in which professional judges pick the winners, this show will allow visitors to choose their favorite breeds, which will be announced at the end of the show.

Leading up to the show, the AKC and CFA are encouraging pet owners to vote for their favorite pets on their website. As of the time of my writing this, dogs were winning over cats 74 percent to 26 percent. You can cast your vote at
